Joan Dent in Studio

Contemporary constructions are presented as sculpture through the personalization of classical forms.  I work minimally, eliminating the extraneous, using only those parts necessary to complete the essential form.  Structure, form, surface, and balance are my aesthetic considerations.  Conceptually, my work alludes to dance, music, poetry, fantasy and spirit.  Metaphors are created using industrial and natural materials in the fabrication of my pieces.
My constructions begin with a concept.  I work directly with the materials, without a preconceived plan, in a series of approximately ten to thirty pieces.  Through investigation, exploration, and evaluation, each new form leads me to the next construction.  This “discovery” provides excitement, fulfillment, and feeds my passion.
